A groundbreaking new project to commemorate 40 years of Super Sentai Series! Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the 16th in the series, represented a fresh start with all new elements. And now the show’s first giant robot Daizyujin has leapt across time to join the Soul of Chogokin series! It’s a revival of one of Japan’s, and the world’s, most popular characters.

Guardian Beast Explanation

Guardian Beast Explanation

  • The five “Guardian Beasts” combine to form Daizyujin. This represented the first archaeological motif in the Super Sentai Series. In the show, the Guardian Beasts aren’t just vehicles, but holy animals with wisdom exceeding our own. They offer guidance – and occasionally discipline – to the team.
Tyrannosaurus Tyrannosaurus
  • The Guardian Beast that combines with TyranoRanger Geki to form Daizyujin’s body. Appeared in episode two before any of the other Guardian Beasts, and featured as the main mecha in episode 6, when Daizyujin debuted. The Soul of Chogokin portrayal features diecast metal neck, chest, thighs, tail mount, and claws. The mouth opens, and the claws, shoulders, elbows, waist, knees, ankles, and tails are posable. It also stores cannons in its chest for use in Dinotanker mode.
ZyuMammoth ZyuMammoth ZyuMammoth
  • Combines with MammothRanger Gouji to form the arms and shoulders of Daizyujin and also provide the Mammoth Shield. The trunk is articulated in four places for easy posing up or down. The ankles and back (which form Daizyujin’s shoulders) are diecast metal. The old 1992 DX Shinka Gattai version of the toy left the joints on the back totally exposed after combining with Daizyujin, but this edition features a new cover system that can be folded behind the shoulders when in Daizyujin mode.
Triceratops Triceratops Triceratops
  • Combines with TriceraRanger Dan to form the left leg of Daizyujin. The front, claws, and tread wheels are all diecast metal. An optional part for replicating the horn-firing scene is included. The treads fold into the body during the combination sequence so as to improve Daizyujin’s appearance. This too is a new feature that wasn’t in the 1992 version.
Pteranodon Pteranodon Pteranodon
  • Combines with the PteranoRanger to for Daizyujin’s chest. The chest detail (the “teeth” on Daizyujin’s chest) was replicated with a sticker in the old DX version of the toy, but the Soul of Chogokin version uses diecast parts. The head and wings are posable, and in a nod to a feature of the old DX version of the toy, the Dinotanker cannons can be attached to it like legs.
Sabertooth Tiger Sabertooth Tiger Sabertooth Tiger
  • Combines with TigerRanger Boi to form the right leg of Daizyujin. The front, wheels, and claws on both legs are diecast. In addition to a posable mouth and neck, the front and rear legs have three joints each for posing. The tail weapon SaberGun can slides to extend or stored away.

The Shinka Gattai DX Daizyujin, sold in 1992, is a legendary item. Released in the United States the following year, it racked up record-breaking sales around the world. The DX Daizyujin marked the transition away from the “DX Chogokin” series; made entirely of plastic, it was the first toy marketed as a “DX Robo” instead. In contrast, the Soul of Chogokin version uses diecast parts in each of the Guardian Beasts for a wonderful sense of weight. All of the joints are posable as well. What’s more, the side skirt armor is hinged, allowing the Daizyujin to take a natural looking wide-legged stance. Of course, the set also incliudes the DinoSword Godhorn and the Mammoth Shield. It’s an all-around high-quality update of the classic character.
This Soul of Chogokin product was made with the help of two of Sentai robot specialists who worked on the 1992 toy, including project manager Tsuyoshi Nonaka and Plex designer Daishi Kato. From that standpoint, this remake represents a wish granted not only to fans but to these two veterans as well. Having assembled the ultimate team, we have done our best to create the ultimate cutting-edge portrayal of Daizyujin, just like it appears on screen!

25 Years in the Making

The Soul of Chogokin Daizyujin was designed with staff members who worked on the original 1992 Shinka Gattai DX Daizyujin: Tsuyoshi Nonaka, who led the project at Bandai, and Daishi Kato, a designer at Plex. Currently, the two work freelance, but they rejoined the Bandai team for this Daizyujin remake. The complexity of the DX Daizyujin made it one of the largest Super Sentai robots of the era. In order to keep costs down, it was decided not to release it as a “DX Chogokin” in 1992. Nonaka and Kato have long wanted to revisit the design, and poured their hearts and souls into this Soul of Chogokin Daizyujin. Here are some of the sketches and notes from the process.

25 Years in the Making
  • Design sketch for the Soul of Chogokin Guardian Beast Tyrannosaurus. Note new specifications for the elbows
(which didn’t move in the 1992 version), rotary joints in biceps and thighs, and movable side-armor.

25 Years in the Making

  • The Guardian Beast Saber Tiger and Triceratops. Joints were added to the Saber Tiger’s legs, and a telescoping mechanism worked into the Triceratops body.

25 Years in the Making

  • 3D data adjustment notes, specified down to the millimeter level. No effort was spared in making this remake as great as possible.
